Vatican policy on HIV/Aids and contraception is “evil and anti-gospel”, he says
Father Bernard Lynch, a gay Irish-born Roman Catholic priest now living in London, is set to speak at the ‘Protest the Pope’ march and rally which takes place in the capital later this month.

And the news has been welcomed by Gay and Lesbian Humanist Association (GALHA).

“As humanists we welcome the opportunity to work with those from all religions – and none – to protest against the State visit of Pope Benedict who has attacked and undermined LGBT Rights on so many occasions,” Alan Knowles said this evening.

Father Lynch was persecuted by the Vatican when he openly disagreed with its policies on gay rights and HIV/Aids in the 1980’s.

Today, he still ministers to people with HIV/Aids in London.

Father Lynch says he is still proud to b a Roman Catholic priest, but that he regards the Vatican’s policy regarding HIV/Aids and contraception as “evil and anti-gospel”.

“The problem is not just the Pope, but many of his advisors,” he told GALHA.   And after insisting that  policies affecting women and LGBT people must change, he added: “I remain a member of his Holiness’s Loyal Opposition”.

Mr. Knowles urged all members of the LGBT community “to work together with unity and pride to protest against the Papal state visit”.

“It is time to respect and celebrate those who are prepared to make a stand against Papal intolerance and prejudice,” he added.

■ The “Protest the Pope” march and rally in London is on Saturday September 18, starting at Hyde Park Corner (top of Piccadilly) at 1:30pm.  The march will go along Piccadilly, Piccadilly Circus, Haymarket, Pall Mall, Trafalgar Square and Whitehall, ending at Downing Street.
