Portuguese govt aims to permit gay marriage

Portugal's Socialist government has drawn up a proposal that would make Portugal the sixth European country to allow gay marriage. The law is almost certain to pass, as the center-left Socialist government has the support of all left-of-center parties, who together have a majority in Parliament. Right-of-center parties oppose the measure.

Two top gay footballers stay in closet

Britain's foremost PR advisor, Max Clifford, told The Independent on Sunday last night that he has represented two high-profile gay Premier League footballers in the past five years and has advised them to stay in the closet because football "remains in the dark ages, steeped in homophobia".

What makes his behaviour stand out is that I’m in Dubai, a province of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) governed by a dictatorial royal family, and a Middle Eastern hotspot attracting the gaze of the world. Like Las Vegas, Dubai was built in a desert from nothing and, like Vegas, Dubai (in the Arab world anyway) is known as sin city.

Gordon Brown 'pushing for European recognition of British civil partnerships'

Prime minister Gordon Brown has said he is pushing European countries such as Spain and France to recognise civil partnerships registered in Britain. Speaking to Johann Hari for an interview in Attitude magazine, Brown said he was negotiating deals with those two countries but wanted to see gay rights recognition spread to "eastern Europe as well as western Europe".

Bahamian film focussing on homophobia opens festival

A BAHAMIAN film telling the story of a gay man’s struggle in a fiercely homophobic society opened the Bahamas International Film Festival on Friday. About 200 Bahamians and international filmmakers attended the world premiere of Children of God at the Atlantis theatre, the first feature film written and directed by Bahamian filmmaker Kareem Mortimer.
