A film on homophobic bullying is to be screened in all UK secondary schools next month. The film – the first of its kind to be sent to all schools – will try to stop pupils using the word "gay" in a derogatory way.

"I think it is important that people, that this fact, that a father can kill his son, simply because of his sexual orientation.  That is an important awareness, because maybe they were cases before, but we just did not know.... We read in the news maybe a father killed, but we did not know why before.  So I think its a very important step."

Assane Seck is the imam (leader) at the mosque of the unit 17 in the suburbs of Dakar. He often preaches against homosexuals "to raise awareness" about this phenomenon. Holder of an MA in Islamic law, this imam strongly condemns homosexuality in Senegalese society, composed of 95% of Muslims living in a secular state: I regard homosexuality in Senegal very much contrary to the faith, the religion and the morals of over 95% of the population," says Seck.

Chinese police shut down country's first gay pageant

Chinese police shut down the country's first gay pageant, just one hour before the event was due to begin. Participants hoped the contest would help challenge domestic stereotypes about homosexuality, classified as a mental illness until 2001, and show the rest of the world that gay people could be accepted in China. But officers arrived at a Beijing nightclub shortly before the Mr Gay China competition started and told organisers it was not properly licensed. They are understood to have told the venue's owners that it was "a sensitive issue".

UK: IBM rated most gay-friendly employer for the second time

IT company IBM has been rated the most gay-friendly company to work for by gay rights organisation Stonewall. The firm was rated best employer in the charity's annual Top 100 Employers List.

More older women coming out as lesbians

Meredith Baxter recently went public about being a lesbian - at age 62, after three marriages and five children. Instead of reacting with shock, many people thought, "Oh, there goes another one." As being gay gains more acceptance in the culture at large, far fewer gays and lesbians have felt the need to be closeted. But we seem to hear a lot more often about middle-aged women who have married and raised families announcing they are lesbians than we hear about men in the same situation coming out as gay.

China paper splashes nation's 'first gay marriage'

State press splashed a front-page photo of China's first publicly "married" gay couple on Wednesday -- the latest sign of new openness about homosexuality in a country where it has long been taboo. The page-one story in the English-language China Daily featured a photograph of the "newlyweds" arm-in-arm during a January 3 ceremony.

Italy 'to open first prison for transgender inmates'

Italy is to open one of the world's first prisons for transgender inmates, reports say. The prison, at Pozzale, near the Tuscan city of Florence, is expected to house inmates who mainly have convictions for drug-related offences and prostitution.
