Stonewall index shows how sexual orientation has become mainstream issue Print E-mail

A record number of organisations have competed for the title of Britain’s most gay-friendly employer, according to gay rights campaigner Stonewall. The diversity champion will be announcing its 2010 Work Equality Index next week, and received over 350 applications for this year’s Top 100 Employers list.

The success of the list shows how tolerance and diversity in sexual orientation has become a mainstream issue for Britain’s workplaces.

The number of companies participating in the index has more than doubled since its inception in 2006, and the minimum index score to win a place in the current Top 100 was 10 per cent higher than in 2009.

The index was complied by assessing organisations’ submissions on equality practices and considering anonymous feedback from over 7,000 employee surveys.

Every organisation in this year’s top 100 offered diversity training that covered lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) issues, and collected monitoring data on the sexual orientation of their employees.

Over 90 per cent of the top 100 employers had an openly gay employee who acted as a role model within their organisation.

There are 23 new employers in the top 100 – including 16 new entries and seven re-entries – and of the 19 sectors represented in the 2010 index, local authorities are the single largest sector featured in the list.

“This year is the second year of our revised and updated index criteria, challenging employers to demonstrate how their efforts to support LGB staff have a lasting impact on their workplace,” said Ben Summerskill, Stonewall’s chief executive. “Employers have responded to this challenge in greater numbers and to higher standards than ever before.”
