Lesbianism' shuts school hostel

The boarding house at a South Coast high school has been closed and 300 girl pupils have been removed from the facility, after allegations of lesbian relationships. The provincial Education Department has appointed a task team to investigate.
Two female boarders were caught kissing at the hostel this week, according to education officials.
Trying to defend themselves, the two identified alleged "lesbian" couples among the boarders and named about 30 other girls.
While some people in the local community believe the girls were removed from the hostel because of their sexual orientation, others say the school was simply against pupils engaging in intimate relationships at the boarding house.
The Mercury was barred from entering the school yesterday. A security guard said the school had issued strict instructions for the media not to be allowed in.
The decision to close the boarding house is said to have come from the school governing body.
A parent of one of the affected girls said some pupils were being accommodated at three homes near the school. Others came from distant areas and had been unable to return to school because of a lack of accommodation.
"The school didn't tell us anything, they just told us to fetch our children. We do not know why they have been removed. The circumstances around their removal are absurd, because some were apparently seen hugging," the man said.
Education Department spokesman Sihle Mlotshwa warned that schools did not have the right to remove or expel pupils because of their sexual orientation.
"The school has been visited by district officials on a fact-finding mission. There's going to be meeting with all relevant stakeholders to look at this issue," he said.
Commission on Gender Equality spokesman Javu Baloyi said the organisation would also look into the matter. If true, the action taken was harsh, unfair and uncalled-for.
Durban Gay and Lesbian Community health centre director Nonhlanhla Mkhize said the incident was "shocking".
She said the SA Schools Act and the constitution did not tolerate such action.
"Such incidents make you wonder whether schools are there to promote only certain aspects of society. Sexual orientation aside, this is a serious injustice to the pupils," she said.
