Iran gets press reprieve Print E-mail

After years of wrangling and frustration, Iran’s independent media received a small sign that the situation could be changing, if only slightly. On Sunday, following a three-year ban, the reformist daily Sharq, or East, reappeared on the streets of Iran. The newspaper had been banned after publishing an interview with a leading gay rights activist.

The courts had closed the newspaper in 2007 after the interview with exiled writer and poet Saghi Ghahreman, who now lives in Canada and continues his gay rights activism.

Reza Hassan, an Iranian media expert who lives in London, told Bikya Masr that observers should be “cautiously optimistic” over the renewal of publishing.

“What we see is the government making a point that they can ban and stop a newspaper from publishing if an article they don’t like is run,” he began. “Look at it this way, if the newspaper returns to its real and solid reporting, then it will be a good moment for Iran, but if it self-censors itself, what is the point of even returning to the street?”

In Iran, homosexuality is forbidden and punishable by jail and even death. Writing on the subject can lead to legal issues, as Sharq knows all too well.

Reformist dailies and magazines are usually closed by a governmental press watchdog under the pretext of having insulted religious and political figures.

Other charges include fomenting public discord and working outside the strict press law.
