Hawaii gay couples fight for equal rights

A lawsuit to be filed in Hawaii by six gay couples asking for equal rights to straight married couples is expected to reach the Hawaii Supreme Court.
The lawsuit was filed on behalf of the couples by Lambda Legal and the ACLU, reports the ON TOP magazine website. It asks for the same rights and privileges given to straight married couples, but without titles such as 'marriage' or 'civil unions.'
The move comes after a same-sex civil unions measure was rejected by current Hawaii Governor, Republican Linda Lingle, earlier this month. The move was described by Jennifer C. Pizer, Lambda Lega's national marriage project director as “a sad surrender to political expediency that does not support business or family interests, but damages them.”
Suzanne King, one of the group's complainants, claims her and her partner of 29 years; "continue to be discriminated against. We're a family unit, and we live our lives just like everyone else, but we aren't treated the same."
