Mexico to Allow Gay Couples to Adopt
Posted by Administrator
Mexico's Supreme Court upheld a law this week allowing gay couples to adopt children in the capital, Districto Federal.
The law allowing same-sex marriage received a lot of attention in international media a few months ago when Mexican singer Paquita la del Barrio said, "I'd rather see a kid die (than be raised by a same-sex couple)."
The ruling comes just one short week after the court voted to uphold the constitutionality of same-sex marriage.
The recent rulings in both Mexico and Argentina are interesting given that both countries have a long standing history of being devoutly Roman Catholic, whereas the United States (which prides itself on religious freedom) has yet to pass any laws regarding the consitutionality of same-sex rights.
Juliana Cano Nieto, of Human Rights Watch, said in a statement: "(This ruling) will have resonance for courts throughout the continent for protecting the basic human rights of LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) people."
