UK: Gay vote minister blasted
Posted by Administrator
A MINISTER who last week revealed he is gay was accused of hypocrisy yesterday after opposing pro-gay legislation in Parliament. Prisons minister Crispin Blunt said in one debate that homosexuality is "not equivalent to heterosexuality".
He announced on Friday he was leaving his wife of 20 years to "come to terms with my homosexuality".
Gay rights charity Stonewall slammed his voting record. He voted against lowering the gay age of consent in line with heterosexuals. He said at the time: "I believe it right that our law should discriminate in that limited way between homosexual and heterosexual practice."
He also voted against gay couples adopting, backed a bill restricting lesbian couples' access to IVF and opposed lifting a ban on openly gay men in the military.
But Mr Blunt DID vote in favour of civil partnerships and outlawing discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation. The minister - the uncle of award-winning actress Emily Blunt - has a son and a daughter with wife Victoria.
