Police hunt homophobic yobs Print E-mail

Police last night branded the violence "abhorrent" and urged the public to help them catch the yobs.
The two victims were walking in Kemp Town, Brighton, at about 2am, when they were approached by two other men, one white, one black, in Upper St James's Street.

The strangers asked them for a light then fired a volley of homophobic abuse at them.

They walked away but were followed and assaulted at the corner of St George's Road and Abbey Road.

They were both punched to the ground and one suffered a broken jaw. The attackers took their bank cards and left.

The first man was described as black and about 6ft.

The other was white, slightly taller, with distinctive blue or green eyes.

Detective Inspector Carwyn Hughes, from Sussex Police's Brighton and Hove anti-victimisation unit, said: "Police planned to visit the area last night to circulate the descriptions of the two men and put up posters appealing for help from the public.

"I would like to hear from anyone who was in the area in the early hours of yesterday morning who may have seen the two offenders.

"Although such violence is thankfully rare, this really was an abhorrent attack leaving one of the men with serious injuries and both friends distressed."

Call DI Hughes on 0845 6070999 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111
