AHMEDABAD- Holy matrimony comes with no sex bar for many Gujaratis now, courtesy an internet website which has brought soliciting homosexual relationship into the public domain.
As many as 79 hopeful Gujaratis, including homosexuals and lesbians from across the country and abroad are soliciting their better half on a matrimonial website for same-sex marriages, a first-of-its-kind in the country.

Of these, 32 matrimonial applications are from Gujarat, including 15 from Ahmedabad. Brainchild of a closet homosexual, Prashant (name changed), based in New Delhi, the website began three years ago and has slowly garnered 818 matrimonials , 632 of which are from India.

With homosexuality banned in India under Section 377, the website has gained popularity only by word of mouth.

According to Prashant, research shows that about 27,000 marriages take place in India every day and 10 per cent of these marriages are between a bisexual and a heterosexual.

“Such a marriage is often not healthy. After 22 years of marriage, I told my wife what I am. Life was never easy, but after the disclosure, the problem is worse,” says Prashant, 55, explaining why he launched this effort.

The website offers a range of choices to applicants- ‘un-entangled, entangled in a heterosexual marriage with and without possibility of divorce, and the concept of a family friend. The latter is meant for those who desire company but are not ready for commitment.

Sociologist Gaurang Jani feels technology is providing the right platform to homosexuals- it is personalized and yet discreet. “Gujarati participation comes as no surprise as the community has a global outlook and constant efforts for creating awareness for HIV-AIDS seem to be bearing fruit,” adds Jani.
