Black LGBT Community Awards nominees announced Print E-mail

A shortlist of Black LGBT people nominated from all aspects of the community including arts, health promotion and community development has been released in the run up to the Awards event on Saturday, 20 September in London. The Black LGBT Community Awards celebrate contribute to gay art, health, culture and community development.The 2008 awards are organised by The Black Gay Men's Advisory Group an independent group of black gay and bisexual men of African and African-Caribbean parentage working for and on behalf of black men who have sex with men.

The ceremony will be held on a luxury cruise liner on the Thames on 20 September and is fast becoming a highlight of the black queer calendar.

Among those nominated are:

Man of the year
Ajamu - photographer, community archivist and founder of www.rukus.co.uk.
Gamal Turawar - the Metropolitan Police's first openly gay black officer.
Simon Nelson - leading HIV campaigner and co-founder of the Black Gay Men's Advisory Group (BGMAG).

Woman of the year
Mz Fontaine - successful recording artist.
Phyll Opoku-Gyimah - co-founder and Managing Director of UK Black Pride.

Advocacy
Imaan - Muslim LGBT support group www.imaan.org.uk
Kairos in Soho - www.kairosinsoho.org.uk
LGBT History Month - www.lgbthistorymonth.org.uk
UK Lesbian and Gay Immigration Group - www.uklgig.org.uk

Arts
Dean Atta - writer, poet and youth worker.

Community Development

Out on Thursday - Out on Thursday has delivered a provision for young gay and bisexual men in Hammersmith and Fulham.

Health Promotion
Anthony Maxom - Emotional and Peer Support Worker for Black MSM and Gay Men.
Big Up - the Black Gay Men's Project at GMFA
Kaleidoscope - a monthly activities group for Black Gay and Bisexual men in East London.
AVERT - an international HIV and AIDS charity based in the UK.
