Teen arrested for hate crime near Des Moines gay bar, police say

A Des Moines teen was arrested in connection with a hate crime Friday night after he allegedly threw bricks at some men near an East Village gay bar and called them anti-homosexual names, according to Des Moines police.
Sander “Sam” O’Dale Johnson, 18, of 912 24th St. in Des Moines, was arrested for assault with a hate crime and violation of individual rights, records show.
Police also suspect Johnson and his friends may have been involved with a similar hate crime on Sept. 6 that also happened near the Blazing Saddle bar in the 400 block of East Fifth Street.
The episode Friday night was reported by three Des Moines men who were standing in the 400 block of East Grand Avenue about 10:45 p.m. when they saw four teenagers throwing bricks and knocking over planters as they walked down the street, a police report states.
The three men told the four teens to quit. The teens then whipped bricks at all three men and called them “faggots,” a police report states.
One of the pieces of brick struck the thigh of one of the three men, a 46-year-old Des Moines resident, police said.
Soon after, police caught four teens a short distance away and brought the brick victim and the other two witnesses to the scene. The victim said he was certain that Johnson threw the brick, but that he couldn’t positively identify the other three, who were ages 16, 17 and 16, police said.
Sgt. Gregg Westemeyer remembered a similar episode about a week before, and had officers photograph all three juvenile suspects to see if the earlier victim would be able to identify them.
On Sept. 6, a Des Moines man was standing near East Fifth Street and Grand Avenue when the teens yelled “fag” and other derogatory names as they passed the Blazing Saddle.
The man told the teens they should not be talking that way and causing problems in that area, a report states.
“It was at this point the suspects started jumping around forming a half circle in front of (the man) then started counting down from 5,” the report says. “Once the suspects got to 1, they assaulted (him).”
The man was hit several times in the head and face. As the teens took off running, they stopped to pick up rocks and threw them at the man.
The teens were gone by the time police arrived, and the man did not want to file a report.
The suspects in the Friday night incident match the description of the teens in the Sept. 6 episode, Westemeyer wrote in a report.
