Black LGBT Awards celebrate community achievements Print E-mail

The second annual Black LGBT Community Awards will be held in London on 20th September.
The ceremony is sponsored by the Metropolitan Police, Bootylicious, Outburst, MOC, and UK Black Pride.

The event aims to celebrate people who have made a difference to their communities, and will entail a gala dinner on a luxury Thames cruiser.

Awards categories include: Club of the Year, Man and Woman of the Year, Advocacy, Health Promotion, Community Development, and Arts.

The winners of each category will be voted for by the public, who can vote online at www.blgbt.com.

Last year’s winners include Queer Nation, the longest running black music club, Queenie, artist and activist, and Jide Macaulay, founder of a gay-friendly church in Nigeria.

Rob Berkeley, Chair of Black Gay Men’s Advisory Group, organisers of the event, said:

"The past year has seen a flowering of so much great work for LGBT Black people, it seems only right to say thank-you in this way.

"We are proud of these people and we simply want to celebrate their work and provide visible role models for others."

This year’s awards will celebrate the contributions of writers, hip-hop musicians, community workers, counsellors and youth workers.
