Gay student hanged himself after anonymous phone taunts about his sexuality Print E-mail

The calls began after Lee Simpson revealed in a letter to his family and friends that he was gay. Months later the 18-year-old student was found hanged at home in Blackley.
His father, John Simpson, 50, believes that the calls taunting Lee plagued him and he could no longer cope with the harassment.
'It happened just before he died,' said Mr Simpson. 'I never expected him to do what he did but those calls definitely didn't help him. I think they pushed him over the edge.

Taunts: Lee Simpson was found hanged at home
'I took most of the anonymous calls. They were Mickey-taking and abusive. I would just put down the phone on them.
'I didn't want Lee to know because I knew it would upset him, but he answered some of the calls. When he answered one, he went crazy at the person on the other end of the phone.
'Lee was very open about his sexuality. It didn't bother me and it didn't bother anyone who knew him but it's not like that in the outside world.'
Mr Simpson, a driver, revealed how Lee had struggled to come to terms with his sexuality. But he wrote a letter to family and friends explaining that he was gay in the hope it would help him.
The letter was sent "about a year ago", but Lee was found dead in March this year.
Lee, who was studying childcare, had hormone treatment because of slow masculine development.

The Manchester inquest recorded he had taken his own life.

Mr Simpson told the inquest the calls had "definitely" upset him.
'He had no problem telling us he was gay but I feel he had trouble with the issue himself,' he said.
'He was also quite religious and possibly that may have conflicted with his sexuality. Lee had quite a high-pitched voice and long hair.
'He was quite feminine in his appearance, which I think bothered him.'
Lee, who lived with his father and older brother David, had left two notes. One read: "I cannot do it anymore."
David said Lee had received nasty calls from a number of unknown people, but "gave as good as he got".
'We were very close and he hadn’t mentioned any difficulties in his life and to me was acting normally,' said David.
Coroner Nigel Meadows said Lee had been having difficulties regarding his sexuality and, after the death of his mum four years ago, discussed how he might kill himself.
'It seems he was not unduly troubled by the calls, certainly not outwardly, and was planning for the future,' he said.
'He had shown no signs of harming
