Gays to Support London Demonstration for a Secular Europe Print E-mail

Simultaneous protests demanding that the Vatican end its interference in Italian, European Union and world-wide politics are being staged in London and Rome on Saturday (February 14).
In London, there is to be a march from outside the Natural History Museum in Cromwell Road to Grosvenor Square, where a protest rally will be held outside the Italian Embassy.

The protest is endorsed by the British Humanist Association, OutRage!, the Gay and Lesbian Humanist Association (GALHA) and many others.

“The freedom that we enjoy in most parts of Europe today depends on a secular state where all citizens, religious and non-religious alike, enjoy equal respect and equal rights in law,” said GALHA secretary David Christmas.

“This also benefits religious believers, who have all too often in the past, been persecuted by those of other religions or by totalitarian ideologies.

“In Britain, recent governments have handed more and more power to schools run by religious groups, allowing them to promote religious doctrines to young children at taxpayers’ expense. At the same time the new EU Treaty risks giving religion yet more privileges,” he continued..

“The most powerful religions in Europe have all too frequently used their influence to denigrate gay people and our relationships, and to try to restrict our rights.

“The Vatican went so far as to oppose a United Nations resolution calling on countries to decriminalise gay relationships. By lining up with these states, some of which still put gay people to death for their sexuality, the Catholic Church is complicit in murder.

‘The Vatican’s determination to prevent gay couples from committing themselves to lifelong, loving, monogamous relationships is as bizarre as it is immoral.

“It’s fitting that Valentine’s Day should see people taking to the streets in defence of a secular state, allowing us all to love whom we choose, within the law,” Mr. Christmas concluded.

The London demonstration will demand that the Vatican stops meddling in politics and abusing its power to oppose human rights.

“We also want the Italian government to cease kow-towing to the Pope’s theocratic agenda,” said Peter Tatchell of the LGBT human rights organisation OutRage!.

Mr. Tatchell is scheduled as a keynote speaker at the rally outside the Italian Embassy.

“Our aim is a secular Europe, where people are free to practice their faith but where no religion has privileged legal status and unique access to political power and influence,” he said.

“We are appalled by the Pope’s repeated attacks on the rights of women and gay people and by his wilful opposition to life-saving condom provision.  The Italian government too often allows itself to be bullied by the Vatican, on issues such as same-sex civil marriage and sex education in schools.”

Mr. Tatchell pointed out that if Catholics suffer discrimination, he would be the first to defend them.

“Equally, when the Pope supports discrimination against women and gay people I will be the first to oppose him,” he said.

“That is the difference between me and the Pope.  I oppose all discrimination, including against Catholics.  He supports sexist and homophobic discrimination whenever it suits his intolerant interpretation of the Christian faith.

■ Saturday’s march in London will assemble outside the Natural History Museum in Cromwell Road (near the corner with Exhibition Road) at 2pm sharp.
