Somali Gay Community was established in 2005 by a small group of Somalian guys who, apart from sharing the same culture and background, acknowledge the fact that we are homosexuals living in the UK. The aim of starting this group is to create a space and medium for somalian gay and lesbians to access information, share experiences and develop support networks.
When we found one another through various means such as meeting in clubs, the internet and through friends, we quickly become a tight-nit family who look after each other. As Somali gay and lesbians, we have and are facing common issues, thus, we want to share our experiences and most importantly build a welcoming and supportive community.
We also aim to provide a pathway and support for our brothers and sisters who are coming to terms with their homosexuality and feel overwhelmed through this transitional, and to many, difficult period. It is important to remember that you are not alone and there are not only fellow Somalian gays that you can talk and relate to but also wider gay and lesbian organisations that can offer you a range of services and advice, from sexual health to housing and immigration issues.
This group’s main focus is for those living in the UK. However, this website can also be of benefit to others around the world. We feel deeply for those living back home in Somalia and lacking the freedom we enjoy here in the west. To them we would like to show our solidarity and support.
Our objectivesOur main objectives are: - To provide and share information regarding homosexuality in general and more specifically in relation to Somalian culture and religion.
- To create an accepting support network within the Somalian gay community.
- To provide a space for Somalian gay & lesbians to meet, share experiences and socialise.
- Initiate an honest and open discussion about homosexuality within the Somali community.
- Promote positive images of Somalian gay and lesbians in Somali communities.
- To liaise with agencies that can provide professional help and support for gays & lesbians living in the UK.
This group as yet is only composed of gay men and we are currently looking for Somalian women who would like to contribute in issues that relate to lesbians. If you do, please contact us.
